Report: Chelsea about to make first signing of the summer as deal agreed
Chelsea are reportedly expected to secure a deal to sign available goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli.
According to the Daily Mail, the Blues will bring the 29-year-old to Stamford Bridge on a free transfer.
It is understood the shot-stopper has turned down an approach from Premier League rivals Aston Villa, so he’s now primed to become Chelsea’s first signing of the summer window.
The report adds he will complete a medical and join within the next 48 hours.
Thomas Tuchel’s side have been busy sorting loan exits so far this summer, but a new face may be about to join the group.
Bettinelli, who’s available on a free after his Fulham contract expired at the end of last season, is someone that will provide cover for Edouard Mendy and Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Bettinelli a sensible addition for Chelsea
It’s not the marquee signing Chelsea fans want, they may need to wait a little while longer still for that.
However, Bettinelli looks a smart move.
The Englishman is going to add to the homegrown quota as the third-choice goalkeeper. In addition, he was in Gareth Southgate’s England squad back in 2018 without earning a cap for his country.
It seems unlikely he’ll got too much game time, but he’s a capable goalkeeper.
He kept 13 clean sheets in 42 games out on loan at Championship club Middlesbrough last season.
