Chelsea defender Jake Clarke-Salter is being strongly linked with a move to English Championship side Birmingham City, who don’t have long left to wrap up a deal.

The EFL transfer window shuts at 5pm today and it looks like there could be one more outgoing from Stamford Bridge.

According to Sky Sports on its live transfer blog (4:21pm, 16 October), Clarke-Salter has agreed to drop down to the second-tier to join Birmingham on a season-long loan.

The 23-year-old has come through the academy system with Chelsea and previously played two senior games for the Blues, but is now set to be loaned out for another spell of first-team football elsewhere.

Clarke-Salter was on loan with Birmingham during the entire 2019/20 season and he’s now set to be returning to St Andrew’s for another stint, which will at least mean he should have no struggle adjusting to a new club.

The left-footed centre-back looked impressive in pre-season when given his chance by senior boss Frank Lampard, but he will be departing on his fifth spell away from Stamford Bridge and it’s hard to picture him breaking into the first-team fold in the future.

Chelsea have left it to the last minute of the transfer window to find a solution for Clarke-Salter and the club should hope he impresses this year in the Championship, and perhaps look at selling him next season when he enters the final year of his contract.
