Reports from Spain have claimed that Chelsea could be tempted to trigger the release clause to sign Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams.

According to Goal in Spain, the Blues are one of a number of clubs who could see the £43m release clause as a fantastic opportunity to secure a star for the future.

An impressive start to the season has seen him called up to the Spain squad who are currently turning a lot of heads at the World Cup in Qatar.

Three goals and four assists in La Liga was enough for him to make it into Luis Enrique’s side, and the manager has rewarded him with appearances in fixtures against Costa Rica and Germany.

With them not confirming their place in the last 16 as of yet, it is unlikely that he will be handed a start at any stage of the competition.

Chelsea could sign Williams

Former Chelsea outcast Alvaro Morata has scored off the bench in both games, and will surely be in contention to start from this point going forwards.

Even if he doesn’t start again at this tournament, it won’t take long for attention to quickly turn to where his future lies.

Goal in Spain have claimed that Bilbao’s concerning financial situation could see them look to cash in on Williams, and Chelsea are one of the sides that could make the purchase.

With Todd Boehly’s regime certainly leaning towards the signings of young players that look destined to become stars, it is realistic to believe they could be tempted to make a move for the 20-year-old.

A move would see the Bilbao man leaving the team his brother, Inaki, has made a name for himself as one of the most resilient and consistent players in La Liga.
