Report: Chelsea could beat Arsenal to right-back transfer due to buy-back clause

Chelsea have the option to re-sign Southampton’s Tino Livramento who has reportedly generated interest from Arsenal and Manchester City, according to Football London.

When Southampton signed Livramento for a reported fee of just £5million in 2021, many questioned Chelsea’s decision to accept such a low offer for one of their best academy prospects.

Livramento may have been out of the picture for a while due to a serious knee injury which has kept him out since last April, but he already proved that he could compete at a senior level in the Premier League in his first eight, nine months at Southampton.

According to journalist Ben Jacobs both Arsenal and Manchester City remain interested in the 20-year-old despite the lengthy injury absence.

Both clubs are said to be ready to monitor Livramento with a view to a possible move in the next two or three transfer windows.

If there is a race for the young right-back, however, Chelsea will likely automatically be in the pole position.

Football London claims that Blues former director Marina Granovskaia inserted a £38million buy-back clause in their transfer agreement with Southampton two years ago.

It seems unlikely that Chelsea would trigger the clause, however, considering they already have Reece James and recently brought in another right-back in Malo Gusto.

Gusto, who stays in Lyon on loan for the rest of the season, is expected to join Graham Potter’s first-team squad next season.

That said, if Livramento could overcome the year-long absence and progress rapidly in the next year, the buy-back clause might prove too attractive to ignore.
