Report: Chelsea could make big offer for 26-year-old defender which is simply too good to turn down

Reports from Italy have claimed that Chelsea have the potential to make an offer for Denzel Dumfries that Inter Milan simply cannot turn down.

According to TuttoMercatoWeb, the Blues have the financial power to make it very difficult for the Serie A side to keep hold of the Dutchman if they want to sign him.

Todd Boehly may be keen to add to their right side of defence after seeing just how big the drop off is when Reece James is unavailable.

Since the 22-year-old suffered an injury which eventually ruled him out of the World Cup, Graham Potter has been unable to find anyone to replicate close to what he brings at both ends of the pitch.

The Blues were reportedly looking at the Inter man during this summer’s transfer window, with them already enduring a number of months without James during the prior season.

Chelsea could sign Dumfries

They ended up not bringing him in, with club captain Cesar Azpilicueta eventually signing a new contract to extend his decade long stay in West London.

However, TuttoMercatoWeb have claimed that they could return with a bid for Dumfries that would overwhelm Inter.

The 26-year-old is currently on display at the World Cup, representing Netherlands in Group A.

He has produced a couple of strong performances playing wing-back, although his attacking strengths have left prior Chelsea target Mathijs de Ligt looking particularly vulnerable as part of a back three.

The potential signing of Dumfries would have to revolve around James, and him knowing that he would likely be a back-up for the majority of games to the England international.

While James could become part of a back three due to his immense defensive ability, too much would be lost in terms of his attacking capabilities by moving him back there.
