Raphael Varane is reportedly in favour of signing for Manchester United instead of Chelsea, according to the Independent.

Varane would seemingly rather join United over the Blues, as both Premier League club’s jostle for his signature.

Farewell to the Frenchman

The France international has one year left on his Real Madrid contract and it looks unlikely that he will sign an extension.

Very few would lambast his decision to leave the La Liga behemoths, considering what he has achieved in a decade-long spell.

He has won four Champions Leagues, three Spanish league titles and numerous other domestic and European trophies.

Luka Modric has already given his seal of approval for the 28-year-old and long-term teammate in an interview with Telefoot.

“Raphael is a great player, but first of all a good person, one of the best defenders in the world in my opinion,” said Modric in 2018.

Chelsea chasing centre-backs

But Varane now wants a change in the shape of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Red Devils.

This would be a blow to Chelsea, who have apparently only recently submitted an offer to Madrid for the defender.

Thomas Tuchel wants another centre-half added to his squad this summer and there are few better on the market than France’s World Cup winner.

They could of course turn to Varane’s former Los Blancos partner Sergio Ramos, who becomes a free agent in just under a week.

Jules Kounde is another option, with the Blues said to be in prime position to snap up the Sevilla youngster.

However, allowing Varane to move to Manchester unchallenged won’t sit well with Roman Abramovich.

His wage demands might be the only hindrance, which falls just short of £400,000-a-week (Independent).
