Reports suggest Chelsea could wrap up a deal for Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan imminently.

According to The Athletic, the Nerazzurri’s need to raise funds this summer could see them look the sell the full-back way in advance of the window closing.

With there being just days until the Premier League season begins, the club are looking to continue to strengthen their defence which was depleted over the summer.

Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen both refused to sign new deals to stay at Stamford Bridge, while Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso are both heavily rumoured to complete moves back to Spain before the end of this month.

With that, the club ideally need to strengthen all the way along the line, despite the signing of Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli.

Chelsea could sign Dumfries soon

The club are now stepping up their interests though, with them highlighting Dumfries as a figure they can bring in quickly.

The Athletic claim this could also help give them coverage in the back three, with Thomas Tuchel keen on using James in that position against stronger opponents.

Dumfries has shown he has the physical qualities to perform in that desired wing-back role in England, having become a brilliant option in Serie A.

His claim to fame in his career so far though has been an impeccable Euro 2020 campaign with Netherlands, where pundit Ally McCoist described him as ‘amazing’.

The Blues are close to securing an option on the opposite side of defence, after agreeing personal terms with Marc Cucurella over a potential deal to move to West London.

The switch is now relying on the Blues agreeing a fee with Brighton for the Spaniard, although they are likely to be encouraged to do so by the news that Manchester City are at a sticking point in their own bid to sign him.
