Chelsea could reportedly release Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at the end of the season with the striker already speaking to Barcelona over a potential return.

The 33-year-old told Barcelona about his desire to return to Camp Nou during his visit to their dressing room after their win over Real Madrid last Sunday, according to Spanish outlet Sport.

He is even said to be prepared to agree to lower wages compared to what he earns at Chelsea to facilitate a possible summer return.

Aubameyang, who scored 11 goals in the second half of last season for Barcelona before he joined Chelsea, reportedly retains the admiration of both Xavi Hernandez and the Barcelona board.

Obviously, the striker signed a two-year contract with Chelsea last summer and the London club will have the final say on this.

But it is fair to say that a summer exit would be the only sensible outcome for both Chelsea and the player himself.

The former Arsenal striker has only made four starts (12 appearances) in the Premier League for Chelsea and was left out of Graham Potter’s last three matchday squads.

The fact that Chelsea are under pressure to trim their squad, as well as reduce their wage bills, would only help Aubameyang’s case.

Sport adds that there are indications that Chelsea would terminate the Gabonese striker’s contract which would allow him to join Barcelona on a free transfer once again.

A recent report from The Evening Standard also mentioned that Barcelona are also prepared to save Aubameyang from his disastrous spell at Chelsea.

Chelsea reportedly paid Barcelona €12million (£10.6m) for Aubameyang last September.
