Chelsea defender Emerson Palmieri could reportedly end up joining Italian club Inter Milan during this summer’s transfer window.

According to Calciomercato, the 26-year-old has already agreed personal terms for a five-year deal with the Serie A club and they are lining up a move to secure him.

It is understood that the left-back could make an £18million switch to the San Siro, despite there being interest from Napoli too.

The report explains that the deal still needs to receive the green light from both Chelsea and current Inter boss Antonio Conte for the transfer to be wrapped up.

Emerson has struggled to become a nailed-on starter during his two-and-a-half years at Stamford Bridge, making 55 appearances in total in that time.

The Italian full-back played 21 games across all competitions last season under current boss Frank Lampard, but was edged out for the position by teammate Marcos Alonso after a string of underwhelming displays.

Ex-Blues manager Maurizio Sarri previously voiced his high opinion on Emerson, who he worked with during the 2018/19 campaign.

“He’s very important. He’s improving. I’m very happy with him, he’s improving and he’s a very good player,” Sarri told the club’s official website in January 2019 after a Carabao Cup win over Tottenham.

Emerson should be sold

With Chelsea linked with a host of left-backs already this summer, it looks like they are keen to strengthen that area of the pitch and there is no doubt that the leaky defence needs addressing.

Alonso should be kept on as a second-choice left-back next season due to his goalscoring exploits and suitability in the wing-back role, but Emerson surely has to make way for a marquee addition at left-back.

It’s never quite happened for Emerson in West London, he’s shown in glimpses signs of a top full-back with his pace and determination, but hasn’t put together a consistent run of form to make himself standout.
