Report: Chelsea discussed targeting 'extraordinary' 24-year-old midfielder, but Tuchel wasn't keen

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel was reportedly not keen on his club’s interest in PSV Eindhoven star Ibrahim Sangare in the summer.

According to The Athletic, the Blues discussed the PSV midfielder as a transfer target.

The report claims Tuchel wasn’t too keen on a move for the 24-year-old player, though.

Sangare is a key player in PSV’s line-up that ended up staying with the Dutch club beyond the summer’s deadline day, so he can now focus on the campaign ahead with his current side.

The defensive midfielder’s already scored three goals in eight appearances across all competitions this season.

Tuchel not keen on Sangare

It’s interesting to hear that PSV’s highly rated midfielder wasn’t to Tuchel’s liking.

Described as “extraordinary” by former PSV manager Aad de Mos, Sangare is an all-action midfielder with great physical attributes and he’s caught the eye in European club competitions.

On paper, the Ivory Coast international has the potential to be a big success in the Premier League further down the line.

For Tuchel, he’s been backed strongly by the new Chelsea ownership, and all eyes are on him to be a success.

He may not have welcomed Sangare to his squad, but 25-year-old central midfielder Denis Zakaria did join from Juventus on loan during a manic deadline day.

Midfield options

There’s now a depth of options in the centre of the park at Chelsea, albeit it’s needed because some individuals are becoming quite injury prone.

Zakaria will now compete for a starting position alongside the likes of Mateo Kovacic, N’Golo Kante, Conor Gallagher, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Jorginho.

The fact Tuchel’s played with a midfield trio at times already this season is encouraging that he’s willing to be flexible with his formations.
