Report: Chelsea expected to bid for ‘fantastic’ 23-year-old in the summer but there could be a problem now

Chelsea’s reported plan to move for Sevilla defender Jules Kounde in the summer may be under threat.

According to The Express, Chelsea are expected to try sign the 23-year-old centre-back ahead of next season. However, there could now be a problem.

It is explained that Spanish club Sevilla will be reluctant to lose Kounde in the summer if his defensive partner Diego Carlos exits this month.

The report explains Newcastle United are trying to bring 28-year-old centre-half Carlos to St James’ Park during the January transfer window, which could have a knock on effect on Kounde’s future. The exit of Carlos will be blocked depending on the severity of Kounde’s current injury, though.

Kounde, described by “fantastic” as ex-Chelsea player and pundit Frank Leboeuf, would be a shrewd addition to the Blues squad at Stamford Bridge next season.

He’s an aggressive centre-back with pace and athleticism, but it remains to be seen if he’ll be available.

Chelsea back four next season?

If there is a massive defensive clear-out over the summer, could Chelsea switch from a back three to a back four next season?

Blues manager Thomas Tuchel has preferred three centre-halves during his time in charge, but he recently switched for a match due to a lack of available centre-backs at the time.

Thiago Silva and Trevoh Chalobah are on the books next season. The futures of Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and Cesar Azpilicueta are not yet decided, though.

France international Kounde would be a top addition over the summer to Chelsea’s ranks and fans should hope Newcastle don’t wreck the plans.
