Report: Chelsea getting closer to signing 25-year-old star, talks have progressed in recent days

Chelsea are reportedly progressing with their talks to try sign Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong.

According to 90min, Chelsea and Manchester United are both in a transfer battle for the 25-year-old midfielder.

It is explained United have already struck an agreement with Barcelona for a £71million transfer, but no deal has been finalised as the Spanish club still owe him substantial wages.

The report explains Thomas Tuchel’s Blues are now making progress in recent days with their own interest in the Holland international.

De Jong would ideally like to stay at the Camp Nou in the upcoming 2022/23 season, but wants Champions League football if he does leave Barca.

It’s been claimed recently that De Jong would actually prefer a move to Stamford Bridge this summer rather than joining Man United.

There would be a lot of intrigue to see how he would cope with the physicality and pace of the Premier League.

Chelsea talks progressing for De Jong

It looks like Chelsea’s interest to sign the Barcelona player is now heating up.

De Jong, who was a sensation at ex-club Ajax earlier in his career, is most recognised as a deep-lying midfield playmaker.

He played an important role last season in the Barca XI, scoring four goals and making five assists in 45 games across all competitions.

Chelsea do currently have an overload of top-quality midfield options within their ranks, but is it time for there to be a reshuffle in the centre of the park?
