Report: Chelsea have now made a very strong offer to sign 'spectacular' £167m international

Chelsea have reportedly gone in hard to sign Ronald Araujo from Barcelona.

According to Marca, the Blues have already made a ‘very strong’ offer for the centre-back’s services.

Barca’s bright spark

Araujo has become a solid foundation in the otherwise crumbling Camp Nou ever since he moved from Boston River in 2018.

He quickly established himself in Barca’s B-team before moving up the senior squad fully last season.

The 22-year-old is now an extremely important member of Xavi’s side, who are still yet to fully click into gear under their iconic former midfielder.

“I’m very happy to have Ronald on the team. He has such a great personality,” Xavi said in November.

“It’s spectacular to see him train. He’s so positive, he has an excellent character and that’s fundamental to us.”

Clearly, the Spanish coach rates Araujo highly and view him as a player to push the Catalonians into a brighter, better future.

Yet, these desires might be extinguished if Chelsea have their way.

Swopping for Spain’s best

As Marca make out, the Blues seemingly want to bring the Uruguayan on board over the summer.

With the scenario of losing at least one of Thomas Tuchel’s key defenders at the end of the campaign looming large, reinforcements are already being considered.

Jules Kounde looks the most likely to join the Stamford Bridge band, but he could be followed by a fellow La Liga star.

Or, Araujo might be the alternative to the Sevilla man if they fail to strike up a deal again with Chelsea like last summer.

Either player would be an exciting addition for the European champions.

Both are full internationals with France and Uruguay respectively, with a decent amount of Champions League experience as well.

However, neither will come cheap.

Kounde could cost around £59m (Super Deporte), whilst Araujo’s release clause apparently stands at £167m (Sport).

Better start counting out those pennies, Roman!
