Report: Chelsea have now made contact over signing 'very special' £33m goalscorer in the summer

Chelsea have reportedly reached out to Reims about potentially signing their starlet striker Hugo Ekitike in the summer.

Footmercato claim a conversation has been instigated by the Blues concerning the teenager’s future once the campaign concludes.

Why is there such excitment around Ekitike?

Ekitike is high on the list of several Premier League clubs, not to mention a handful of Europe’s powerhouses.

Looking at his statistics this season, it’s understandable why.

In 23 appearances, the 19-year-old has scored ten goals and provided three assists for Reims.

That easily makes him the team’s top goal scorer by quite some margin, with his nearest competitor only on three.

This also means Ekitike currently ties with Romelu Lukaku on the scoring front, Chelsea’s record-recruit still struggling to find consistency in the final third.

Perhaps it should come as no surprise then that the Blues want to raid Ligue 1 for an attacker, like they’ve done several times in the past before.

Didier Drogba, Michy Batshuayi and Eden Hazard all crossed the channel to arrive at Stamford Bridge.

But Thomas Tuchel’s employers are not alone in their pursuit of the Ekitike.

Attracting attention from across the board

Newcastle United’s name has cropped up repeatedly in the past four weeks after they failed to sign the centre-forward in January.

According to Bild, Borussia Dortmund have identified the France Under-20 international as a possible successor to Erling Haaland, who could depart at the end of the term.

West Ham United were also interested in the Reims gem last month and might move for him again.

Other suitors will surely also be sniffing around the Stade Auguste Delaune, such is the hype around Ekitike.

His manager, Oscar Garcia, didn’t do much to quell this intrigue.

“There is something very special about him. He’s young, and he has the quality to become a very good player,” Garcia said in November.

Although the French side will be desperate to keep hold of their youthful talisman, saying no to Chelsea is a hard task.

Especially if they offer the £33m (Footmercato) that Reims are apparently demanding for his signature.

A relatively small price to pay for someone with such huge potential.
