Report: Chelsea have now made contact with £40m defender's agent, one year left on his deal

Chelsea have reportedly made contact with the agent of Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly, who’s in the club’s sights this summer.

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Chelsea have stepped up interest in defensive target Koulibaly by actually making contact with his agent in London.

It is understood that the 31-year-old’s considered a cheaper alternative than Blues centre-back targets Matthijs de Ligt and Milan Skriniar, who play for Juventus and Inter Milan respectively.

Koulibaly, who has one year left on a deal that expires in 2023, has been one of Serie A’s most formidable centre-halves in recent years.

It’s been previously reported that the Senegal international may cost £40million to prize away from Naples in this summer transfer window. The Napoli powerhouse is considered a more likely signing for Chelsea than De Ligt, too.

Chelsea contact Koulibaly agent

It sounds like Thomas Tuchel’s Blues are pushing ahead with an attempt to sign Koulibaly.

The African centre-back has spent the prime years of his career in Italy with Napoli, but he’s got all the attributes to be a success if he moved to the Premier League.

His pace, strength and leadership make him such a consistent performer each season.

For Chelsea, they must try find a way to replace Antonio Rudiger next season following his exit to join Real Madrid.

African stars

Chelsea have been fortunate enough over the years to own some of Africa’s greatest players, including current first-choice goalkeeper Edouard Mendy. It would be a reunion of two Senegalese teammates if Koulibaly does sign this summer.

Elsewhere, the likes of Didier Drogba, Michael Essien and John Obi Mikel are some of the numerous African stars to previously light up Stamford Bridge.

There’s no doubt the continent currently possesses some of the elite players in the game.
