Report: Chelsea held talks with 'exceptional' £51m player before he decided to sign for another club instead

Chelsea reportedly held talks with Erling Haaland’s representatives earlier this year ahead of his mammoth move to Manchester City.

According to ESPN, there was a conversation between the Blues and the team looking after the Borussia Dortmund striker before he signed for City.

Chelsea held talks but City captured Haaland

Haaland’s departure from the Bundesliga side has clearly been brewing for a while, finally bubbling over on Tuesday when the Premier League champions announced his £51.1m (Guardian) signing.

ESPN claim that his agent Mino Raiola – who sadly passed away last month – and father Alfie Haaland visited Real Madrid and Barcelona on the same day to discuss a possible transfer.

They also apparently met with board members at Chelsea and Bayern Munich, but felt Pep Guardiola’s employers ‘left the best impression’.

Whatever charm they used, it evidently worked.

The blistering centre-forward will link up with City on the 1st of July, giving him plenty of time to settle before the new season gets underway.

If he slots into Guardiola’s system immediately, the rest of the division, and Europe for that matter, will be quaking in their boots.

Haaland without the hand brake on, within this current City squad, is a pretty terrifying image.

Who will be able to halt the Norwegian in full-flight, with Kevin De Bruyne, Phil Foden and Raheem Sterling surging behind him?

Not many have been able to stop the league leaders even when they’ve played without a traditional number.

Just think what they’ll be able to do with one…

Haaland’s scary numbers

Guardiola already knows what an exciting prospect awaits him.

“The only thing I can say is that he is an exceptional striker. With his age, he is an exceptional striker. He’s a fantastic player – that’s all,” said the Spanish coach on Haaland last April.

Exceptional probably just about sums up Dortmund’s departing gem.

He has scored 28 times this season and that’s pretty poor by his standards.

Last campaign, the 21-year-old hit the 41-goal mark, four shy of his tally for the 2019/20 term.

Guess Chelsea better put off winning the Premier League for another year then…
