Chelsea and Liverpool are reportedly the two clubs at the most advanced stages of signing Barcelona’s Ronaldo Araujo.

According to CCMA, Premier League duo Chelsea and Liverpool are in advanced discussions with the 23-year-old defender.

The report states the South American centre-back is still in negotiations with current club Barcelona about signing a new contract at the Camp Nou, but they’re not willing to increase their latest offer that’s on the table.

In addition, offers from Chelsea and Liverpool are significantly greater from a financial perspective.

Araujo’s stepped up from Barcelona’s academy to first team in the past couple of years, really establishing himself as a key first-team player this season.

The Uruguay international is a ball-playing centre-half that can also slot into a full-back position.

Current Barcelona manager Xavi described him as an “extraordinary defender” when discussing him earlier this year.

Chelsea defence

If the Blues lose several key defenders this summer, manager Thomas Tuchel must be allowed to go sign some suitable replacements of real quality.

Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen are both out of contract at Stamford Bridge this summer, along with club captain Cesar Azpilicueta. Incidentally, Barcelona boss Xavi is reportedly in regular talks with Azpilicueta amid links they want to sign him.

Araujo’s performances in a Barcelona shirt this campaign suggest he’s one of the most exciting young defenders around.

If available, he could be an ideal like-for-like replacement with Christensen.
