Report: Chelsea in contact with Germany international's representatives over potential free transfer move
Chelsea are in “active contact” with Bayern Munich defender Niklas Sule’s representatives over a potential free transfer move, according to German outlet Sport1.
The 26-year-old, whose contract with the Bundesliga champions expires at the end of the season, has reportedly made a final decision over his contract situation.
Sport1 claims that Bayern had planned to reopen the contract negotiation in February, but Sule wants a new challenge abroad and has opted not to extend his contract with the club.
The report mentioned a few clubs currently in the race to sign the soon-to-be free agent: Chelsea, Barcelona, and Newcastle United.
Chelsea and Barcelona, in particular, have reportedly been in contact with Sule’s representatives.
A move to Newcastle, on the other hand, is “out of the question”, Sport 1 further added, since the defender wants to play regularly at the top international level.
Interestingly, Chelsea’s Andreas Christensen, who will also be out of contract at the end of the season, is among the candidates to replace Sule at Bayern.
Sport 1 also previously reported that Bayern already had a meeting with Christensen’s agent back in December.
The two defenders are quite similar as both prefer to play as a right-sided centre-back.
Like Christensen, the former Schalke player is also very comfortable with the ball at his feet, while being taller and arguably stronger than the former.
