Report: Chelsea make club-record bid for 'special' 28-year-old, could turn into swap deal

Chelsea have reportedly made a club-record bid for Inter Milan forward Romelu Lukaku, with a fee that eclipses the £71.6million spent on goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga a few years ago.

According to Alfredo Pedulla, the Blues have submitted a £110.77million (€130million) offer for the Serie A frontman.

It is understood Inter have decided to reject the deal in the last few hours because they hope to keep the 28-year-old at the San Siro.

However, the report does add there is a chance Chelsea could try turn it into a swop deal involving cash plus their own player Timo Werner.

Werner, 25, helped win the Champions League last year during his first season at Stamford Bridge. However, 12 goals and 15 assists across all competitions wasn’t enough to avoid criticism being thrown his way. The rapid German forward has been guilty of missing some golden goalscoring chances at times.

In contrast, Lukaku is a marksman that is so clinical around the box. The left-footed striker ended up with 30 goals in all competitions last season. Also, he has a staggering record of 64 goals in 98 career caps for Belgium.

He’s someone who’s familiar to English audiences from time in the Premier League with Everton and Manchester United, too. Sky Sports pundit Jamie O’Hara described him as “special” last month.

It remains to be seen if Chelsea will return with a new offer that involves Werner, but it seems harsh on the German.
