Chelsea are reportedly closing in on the signing of New England Revolution goalkeeper Dorde Petrovic, a player Liverpool have apparently been eyeing too.
According to the Evening Standard, the Blues are ‘confident’ they can wrap up a deal for the 23-year-old before the transfer window shuts.
Back in May, there was speculation from Serbian outlet Nogo Mania linking Petrovic with both Liverpool and Manchester United.
However, it now looks like Chelsea will be beating the Reds to a third mutual target in quick succession.
The Blues are currently in pursuit of reinforcements in between the sticks following Kepa Arrizabalaga’s loan move to Real Madrid.
In addition, third-choice goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli is out injured, so Chelsea desperately need more cover in goal.
The Blues had 20-year-old Lucas Bergstrom on the bench for their first two Premier League games on the season.
The Standard has reported that Petrovic is Chelsea’s top goalkeeping target this summer. And things seem to be going in the right direction for his signing.
He would be following in the footsteps of Gabriel Slonina by joining the Stamford Bridge outfit from an MLS club.
‘Big guy’
Petrovic has been deemed ‘one of the best goalkeepers in the MLS’, so it’s no surprise to see links with the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool and Man United.
New England Revolution ace DeJuan Jones spoke highly of Petrovic last summer, deeming him “absolutely incredible”.
Jones lauded about Petrovic’s ability to keep the Revolution in games, adding that he’s such a ‘big guy’ between the sticks at 6ft 4in tall.
First Moises Caicedo, then Romeo Lavia… could Petrovic be the next Liverpool target to opt for Stamford Bridge instead?
