Chelsea are likely to sell Mateo Kovacic in the summer transfer window, according to reports.

The Guardian claims that Chelsea have accepted they’re ‘likely’ to lose Mateo Kovacic at the end of the season.

It is understood that the 29-year-old central midfielder is currently attracting interest from Bayern Munich, Manchester City and Manchester United.

The report explains that the Blues are under pressure to raise funds to help balance the books, so Kovacic could be one of those sold because he’s about to enter the final year of his contract at Stamford Bridge.

Apparently, Chelsea’s owners are steering away from allowing players go into the final year of their deals, and there’s no indication the midfielder will agree a new contract in West London.

In our view, losing Kovacic could be quite a blow and it’s definitely not time for him to leave this summer.

The £150,000-a-week (Salary Sport) star is consistently a solid performer in the Blues XI, providing decent energy and technical quality in the centre of the park.

We don’t think he’s been at his very best this season, like so many of his teammates, but it would be horrible watching him go and be a big success at a rival club.

Blues attacker Kai Havertz described Kovacic as the most skilful player at Chelsea this week, which goes to show just how highly he’s rated by his peers.

Let’s learn from our Jorginho mistake and not directly strengthen a rival.

Chelsea’s permanent manager next season, which the media indicates will be Mauricio Pochettino, should get the chance to work with Kovacic in pre-season.

He’s one of the more experienced heads in the Blues dressing room that can perform at the highest level.

The main issues regarding the Croatian maestro is the contract situation at Stamford Bridge.
