Report: Chelsea now unlikely to offer £50m player a new contract, he could leave the club next summer

The chances of Jorginho receiving a new contract from Chelsea are reportedly extremely slim.

This is according to 90min, who claim it is ‘unlikely’ that the Italian’s deal will be extended beyond 2023.

What is the situation with Jorginho?

Jorginho’s stint with the European champions is set to expire next summer.

There hasn’t yet been much indication of the club’s desire to renew his current agreement.

Having turned 30 in December, the midfielder is now on the wrong side of the line in terms of being awarded a long-term contract by the Blues.

They are often hesitant to tie down those who cross this particular threshold, with Marina Granovskaia generally leaving such conversations until the very last minute.

N’Golo Kante, Marcos Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta are in the same boat.

Out of the four, Jorginho’s position is potentially the most precarious.

Alonso has proved pretty invaluable during Ben Chilwell’s absence, whilst Azpilicueta’s status within the squad remains strong.

Kante might not be the machine he once was, but the Frenchman can still be formidable on his day.

Meanwhile, his fellow midfielder has fallen quite far from the pedestal that saw him win the European Championships and finish third at the Ballon d’Or ceremony.

The Italian job hasn’t quite gone to plan

Jorginho is now arguably fourth in Chelsea’s pecking order when it comes to central midfielders.

When both fit and firing, Kante and Mateo Kovacic probably make up the best ‘double pivot’ combination.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s most recent revival has seen him start in the Champions League quarter-final away to Real Madrid and score in the FA Cup semi-final against Crystal Palace.

Facts that have evaded Jorginho, as he looks to retrieve the goods he held only a matter of months ago.

Unfortunately for the £50m (Sky) arrival from Napoli, time is running out to impress Thomas Tuchel and Chelsea’s chain of command.

Once the campaign concludes, the clock will be ticking on his tenure at Stamford Bridge.
