Chelsea are reportedly interested in Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Alphonse Areola as concerns over Kepa Arrizabalaga’s future at Stamford Bridge arise.
The 27-year-old is currently on loan at Real Madrid as a back-up to former Blues Thibaut Courtois.
He has featured in just 11 games this season, including the three Ligue 1 games with PSG prior to his loan move in September last year.
According to a report from French outlet Le10Sport, Real Madrid will not extend the France international’s loan deal beyond this summer, while PSG are looking to sell since they still consider Keylor Navas as the first-choice shot-stopper.
The report further added that two Premier League clubs; Chelsea and Newcastle United are interested in Areola who knows he will have “no trouble finding a way out of PSG”.
The “case” could take shape in the coming weeks, the report claimed.
The goalkeeper department is certainly one of the areas Chelsea boss Frank Lampard may want to strengthen this summer, considering his options are 38 years old Willy Caballero and underperforming Kepa.
Despite not having plenty of minutes to showcase his full capabilities this season, Areola has kept 37 clean-sheets from 76 appearances in domestic leagues in the past four seasons (73 in Ligue 1 with PSG, three in La Liga with Real Madrid – FBref).
That is an impressive 48.6% clean-sheet rate. For comparison, Kepa has had 29% clean-sheet rate in the same time frame (34 clean-sheets in 53 La Liga appearances for Athletic Bilbao and 64 Premier League apps for Chelsea – FBref).
