Report: Chelsea privately make it clear to their 'special' player they'll offer him a new deal
Chelsea have reportedly made it clear to their youngster Reece James that they plan to give him a new improved contract.
According to the Daily Mail, the Blues have privately made it clear to the 22-year-old that they want to reward him with a new deal to increase his current £70,000-a-week wage.
It is understood that contract discussions may not actually begin until the transfer window ends at the of August, though.
The report adds that Todd Boehly, who’s Chelsea’s new co-owner and interim sporting director, is personally intervening to ease any doubts about James’ future. This comes at a time when both Manchester City and Real Madrid are admirers of his.
New Reece James contract
It’s a no-brainer to get the future of James wrapped up as soon as possible.
There’s a lot of work that needs doing to bring fresh faces into the squad, but they can’t forget about the talent already at Stamford Bridge.
James, described by Kai Havertz as “special” last season, fits into the category of elite players in Chelsea’s squad.
The right wing-back gives so much to Thomas Tuchel’s side going forward, scoring six goals and making 10 assists in 39 appearances last season.
His defensive game is continuing to improve as well with great strength and aggression.
It was quite telling how much the Blues missed James, along with Ben Chilwell, when the pair were injured for parts of the 2021/22 campaign. Let’s hope the wing-back pairing can both be fit and firing for the whole of the new season.
