Report: Chelsea scouts impressed by ‘powerful’ potential Rudiger replacement

Chelsea are reportedly interested in Torino defender Gleison Bremer amid the risks of losing key defenders at the end of the season.

This is according to a report from The Sun, which claims the Blues are drawing up a list of potential replacements for their soon-out-of-contract defenders.

Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen, Thiago Silva, and Cesar Azpilicueta are all in the final seven months of their respective contract at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea seem to have had a hard time negotiating new contracts with Rudiger and Christensen, and it would be sensible if they began looking at possible replacements.

The Sun claims Torino’s Brazilian defender, Bremer, is high on Chelsea’s list of targets.

The 24-year-old predominantly plays in the middle of the back three at Torino, so, on paper, adapting to Thomas Tuchel’s 3-43 system would not be a problem for him.

The report also mentioned that Chelsea sent their scouts to watch Bremer in action against Empoli last week, and they have been impressed by “the powerful defender”.

Question mark over Bremer’s ball-playing ability for Tuchel’s Chelsea system

Bremer himself will soon enter the final 18 months of his contract, and Torino are reportedly bracing themselves for likely offers for the centre-back.

The former Atletico Mineiro star’s numbers in Serie A this season has been quite outstanding, averaging two tackles, 3.7 interceptions and 4.2 clearances per game (Opta via Whoscored).

It remains unclear, however, whether he would fit into Chelsea’s playing-out-from-the-back approach.

Bremer has an 81.7 per cent average pass success rate, which is quite low for a defender. To put it into perspective, Thiago Silva averages a 90.2 per cent pass success rate.
