Chelsea are reportedly set to make a bid worth £48 million for Brighton centre-back Lewis Dunk. The Daily Star has claimed that the Blues are getting ready to make a move for the 28-year-old English defender this month.

The Times had previously reported that the club made an initial inquiry about Dunk and it now seems that their interest has notched up a level. The Brighton defender has been superb for the Seagulls this season and Lampard is seemingly keen on securing his services.

The Blues have had some problems at the back this season and could do with an experienced head to help organise the defence. Dunk would certainly provide that and has been a very reliable option for his current club this season.

They will not be keen to let him go but a bid of £48 million could prove too tempting to turn down. It would make the defender the fourth most expensive English player of all time and would be Brighton’s biggest player sale ever.

Lampard will need to think carefully about a move for the Seagulls captain. Spending that much on a 28-year-old centre-back is a risky move. It could prove to be a waste of money in the long run. The defenders Chelsea currently have could surpass Dunk’s abilities in the coming years and one, in particular, has impressed of late.

That man is Andreas Christensen. He impressed fans again in the defeat to Newcastle and is continuing a really good run of form. Signing Dunk could send him back to the substitutes bench and limit his development for the rest of the season.
