Report: Chelsea still looking at signing ‘fantastic' full-back, even after Kenedy recall
Chelsea are reportedly still interested in trying to sign Barcelona youngster Sergino Dest this month.
According to The Athletic, the Blues are looking at a loan deal for Barcelona’s 21-year-old defender.
The report explains Thomas Tuchel’s side still have him on their radar, even after recalling Kenedy from his loan in January.
Dest is a versatile defender that can play as either a right-back or left-back, so would be a valuable addition to help reinforce Tuchel’s options at Stamford Bridge in the second half of the season.
The full-back, described as “fantastic” by Dani Alves last year, usually operates on the right. However, the fact he can play on the left must interest Chelsea.
A long-term injury to Blues left wing-back Ben Chilwell means he’s out for the rest of the season, so they’re trying to find a solution in that area of the pitch.
USA international Dest is quick, athletic and a rising talent. However, it would be a big ask stepping into Tuchel’s XI as Chilwell’s short-term replacement.
Do Chelsea need another full-back?
The Athletic claim there is a “strong possibility” Chelsea don’t sign anyone before the January window shuts, which could end up leaving them short at the back.
There is an argument to say there is enough cover once Reece James returns to fitness. James and Cesar Azpilicueta can play at right-back, while Marcos Alonso and Malang Sarr compete on the opposite flank.
It’s been clear how much Chelsea rely on their wing-backs in recent times, though.
