Report: Chelsea still 'monitoring' 23-year-old despite last summer's failed transfer attempt

Chelsea are still monitoring Paris Saint-Germain wing-back Achraf Hakimi despite missing out on the former Inter Milan star last summer, according to The Athletic.

As things stand, Reece James and Cesar Azpilicueta are the only two natural right-back options in Thomas Tuchel’s squad.

The latter triggered an automatic one-year extension this season which ties him to the club until 2023, but his future remains uncertain.

The Athletic claims that before the sanctioning of club owner Roman Abramovich, Azpilicueta was given a verbal agreement that he would be allowed to leave this summer.

Barcelona have reportedly offered him a two-year deal with an option for a third.

This means Chelsea could need another right fullback or wing-back to cover for James.

Chelsea reportedly remain interested in Hakimi

Hakimi was one of the wing-backs linked with a move to Stamford Bridge before he eventually joined PSG on a five-year deal last summer.

Chelsea are reportedly still keeping an eye on the Morocco international despite their failed pursuit.

The 23-year-old, however, is not exactly a player a club would sign to play a backup role.

Instead, The Athletic added that Chelsea’s reignited interest in Hakimi poses a question of whether they are readying themselves just in case James leaves in the future.

James, who has three years left in his contract, is reportedly admired by Manchester City and Real Madrid.

While for potential a backup right wing-back, The Athletic mentioned Dujon Sterling as an option.

The 22-year-old had a season-long loan spell at Blackpool and Tuchel is said to rate the academy graduate.

Chelsea could also dip into the transfer market and go for Barcelona’s Sergino Dest.

The US international has reportedly been under their radar for over a year and could provide cover on both flanks.

Another name recently linked with Chelsea is RC Lens’ Jonathan Clauss, although the 29-year-old is reportedly close to joining Atletico Madrid.
