Chelsea are reportedly keen to meet with Andreas Christensen one last time to converse about his contract situation.

According to Sport, Christensen cannot depart South West London until he’s assembled with the club’s hierarchy for a final occasion and at least listen to their offer of a new deal.

What is happening with Andreas?

Sport claim that the Danish defender is on the verge of joining Barcelona as a free agent.

The Spaniards have been working on this operation for several months since discovering that the player had reservations about extending his stay at Chelsea.

There is apparently already a verbal agreement between the two parties, but nothing concrete can happen before Marina Granovskaia gets into a room with the centre-back.

Although Christensen has dropped down the pecking order recently, there will still be a desire to keep him on board for another season at least.

Not only because of his capabilities, but because signing a replacement in his position is almost certainly going to cost more than it would to offer him a higher pay package.

Plus, if Antonio Rudiger and Cesar Azpilicueta are also allowed to leave once their contracts expire in the summer, then Thomas Tuchel’s defence will look rather slim.

Yet, despite being blooded into the blue family, Christensen may well reject any further advances from his current employers in favour of Barca.

The bright lights of Barca

Why any footballer would choose the Camp Nou over Stamford Bridge right now is a mystery, however, everybody works in different ways.

Perhaps the thought of a fresh start is enough to entice the Denmark international.

Or, maybe Xavi’s bosses have promised him a prominent role in the continued rebuild under the iconic midfielder.

Gerard Pique has reached the crescendo of his career, whilst Sport state that the La Liga side are keen to get rid of Samuel Umtiti, Oscar Mingueza and Clement Lenglet.

With Thiago Silva sticking around for another term and Jules Kounde possibly joining Tuchel’s squad, it’s understandable why Christensen might view a brighter future away from Chelsea.
