Report: Chelsea watched attacker recently with 52 G/A this season, Thierry Henry is a big fan
Chelsea have reportedly set their sights on RB Leipzig’s Christopher Nkunku, who’s having an outrageous individual season.
According to Football London, the Blues have had a long-term interest in the 24-year-old attacker.
It is understood that Thomas Tuchel’s side have scouted him recently, too.
The report explains any chance of Chelsea bidding for him will depend on the new ownership, but he’s a player that now has just over two years remaining on his contract with German side Leipzig.
Nkunku, who’s having the campaign of his life, is one of the most in-form players across the whole of Europe.
The versatile French forward has 32 goals across all competitions this season, including in Leipzig’s defeat to Rangers last night in the Europa League semi-finals. In addition, he’s provided 20 assists.
His 52 direct goal contributions in a single season puts him on the map as one of the most dangerous attackers around.
Premier League legend Thierry Henry recently raved about his talent.
” I do love watching him. Goals and assists. He is just having fun this season. But he is adding goals this year. He’s in the national team now. His confidence. The world wants him,” Henry told CBS Sports (27/04/22 at 10:50pm).
Nkunku towers over Chelsea numbers
There isn’t a single Chelsea player this season that gets anywhere close to the levels achieved by Leipzig’s talisman.
Blues star Mason Mount has had a fine campaign, scoring 12 goals and making 15 assists across all competitions. Therefore, it’s no surprise to hear a new contract could reportedly be heading his way at Stamford Bridge.
It’s quite worrying that he’s head and shoulders above his teammates in terms of goal contributions, though.
Thomas Tuchel’s side are just lacking the attacking firepower that someone like Nkunku would bring.
It’s certainly not a personal attack because many players have underachieved in the goals department, but Romelu Lukaku’s not filled the striker role as hoped. He’s scored only five Premier League goals and has already been linked with a possible summer exit.
