The future of Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger is under threat, according to a report.
The Daily Mail claims that the German centre-back is facing an “uncertain future” at Stamford Bridge, as manager Frank Lampard looks towards improving his defensive options.
It is understood that there is doubt over the 27-year-old’s position at the club.
The report explains that Rudiger is yet to enter any discussions about a new contract, which is due to expire with the Blues in 2022.
Chelsea have had an issue in the heart of defence all season, with Rudiger, Andreas Christensen, Kurt Zouma and Fikayo Tomori all featuring.
Lampard has struggled to find a nailed-on partnership at centre-back and the individuals have shown form at various points in the campaign.
Lampard must throw down gauntlet to Rudiger
Chelsea fans are crying out for a marquee signing in defence ahead of next season, something that isn’t surprising considering how the campaign has gone so far in terms to conceding goals.
The Blues have four talented centre-back options on the books, but not one has put their hand up to stamp down a starting XI spot and prove to Lampard they deserve a regular position moving forward under him.
But Lampard should throw down the gauntlet to Rudiger in the final few games of the season, by giving him the chance to really prove himself as someone who can be trusted next year.
Chelsea have an FA Cup semi-final against Manchester United at the weekend and that’s followed by the final two Premier League games of the season, as well as the second leg of a Champions League last-16 tie with Bayern Munich.
If Rudiger can rediscover his top form in these games perhaps it could be enough to convince the manager to change his mind on his future.
