Chelsea prospect Xavier Simons is reportedly close to joining Championship side Hull City on a temporary basis.

According to the Evening Standard, Chelsea’s 19-year-old talent is “on the verge” of joining Hull on a season-long loan for the rest of this campaign.

It is understood that there should be a medical today (Wednesday) ahead of the transfer being finalised.

The report adds Hull appear to have won the race for the teenager’s signature ahead of AFC Wimbledon.

It’ll be the second time in this summer window a Chelsea player has left for Hull, with 23-year-old goalkeeper Nathan Baxter currently on loan at the KCOM Stadium already.

Xavier Simons close to Hull loan

Simons is one of numerous talented youngsters in Chelsea’s academy, who now looks primed for his first ever loan spell away from Stamford Bridge.

He made his first-team debut in a League Cup match for the Blues last season, but will head to Hull without any other senior experience to call upon. The London-born midfielder could be a great addition for the Championship side, though.

Simons has the versatility to drop in as a wing-back, something he actually did on his single Chelsea appearance.

He’s a defensive midfielder by trade that’s great on the ball, plus has shown real leadership skills by wearing the armband in the academy teams.

Fingers crossed Simons is the latest in a long line of Chelsea youngsters to take a big step forward with a year in the Championship.

The best recent examples are how well the second division proved to be in the development of both Reece James and Mason Mount.

There’s a number of really exciting young midfielders on the Blues books right now, so it’ll be interesting to see where Simons compares this time next year.
