Inter Milan still reportedly have Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso on their radar, with eyes already turning to the next transfer window.

This is according to Calciomercato, who claim Inter have a narrowed down a three-man short-list of left-backs they’d like to sign, naming Alonso as one of the candidates.

It was not long ago that the Spaniard was being presented to the Serie A champions in an attempt to lure Romelu Lukaku back to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea offered £85m (Sky Sports) plus the 30-year-old in return for Lukaku’s services.

Inter rejected the initial attempt but settled for £97.5m (Sky Sports) instead.

For a lot of the summer, it seemed the full-back was going to be offloaded, despite being restored to the fold by Thomas Tuchel.

However, it was Emerson Palmieri who was forced to leave the left-back department, the Italian joining Lyon on a season loan.

Saved from the trials of joining a new team, Alonso wanted to demonstrate why his employers were right to keep him on board.

He was excellent in the opening day Premier League victory over Crystal Palace, curling home a delightful free-kick to jolt proceedings into action.

Strong displays against Arsenal and Liverpool were soon to follow before the international interlude took centre-stage.

His efforts were rewarded via a nomination for the leagues Player of the Month award.

It speaks volumes for Alonso’s renovation that he is keeping Ben Chilwell out of the picture.

There is a strong argument to suggest he is showing similar form to the one witnessed in his maiden campaign at Chelsea after being signed from Fiorentina for £24m (Sky Sports).

A lot older and wiser, could the 2016/17 trick be repeated again? Alonso will certainly hope so.
