Report: Club forced to set asking price for 28-year-old amid 'insistent' interest from Chelsea
Chelsea might still have the opportunity to sign Inter Milan striker Romelu Lukaku, but will have to meet the Serie A champions’ huge asking price, according to Italian outlet Tuttosport.
There are only about five weeks left before the Premier League transfer window closes on August 31, and Chelsea are yet to make any summer signing.
They still have a Champions League-winning squad, of course, but it has been a surprisingly quiet transfer window for Chelsea particularly compared to last summer’s.
Various reports suggest that they have done some work behind the scenes, including their failed attempt to sign Achraf Hakimi, and alleged informal proposals to sign Erling Haaland.
Haaland might not be the only striker target that Chelsea are looking at, however, as The Telegraph’s Matt Law claimed (via London is Blue podcast) there are still talks for Lukaku “going on behind the scenes”.
While Inter do not want to sell Lukaku, Tuttosport claims, they have now eventually had to set their price for the striker due to Chelsea’s insistent interest.
Inter would reportedly want €120million (£102.7m) for the Belgium international. That or Lukaku stays in Milan, Tuttosport added.
It is still a lot of money but certainly far below the €175m (£150m) that Dortmund are reportedly asking for Haaland this summer.
Lukaku has also left Mino Raiola, who is also Haaland’s agent, and his current agent Federico Pasterello has a good relationship with Chelsea (The Athletic) which might help during negotiations.
Chelsea are looking for a world-class No.9, and unfortunately, there are only a few of them, let alone those available in the transfer market.
Whether it’s Haaland, Lukaku, Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane, or even Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski, whom Chelsea have been linked with, any of these strikers will likely cost the club around £100m or more in transfer fee.
