Report: Club growing confident they'll soon be able to sign £24m Chelsea player, talks are ongoing

Spanish giants Barcelona are reportedly growing increasingly confident of signing Chelsea player Marcos Alonso soon.

According to Sport, the La Liga side are optimistic that they’ll bring the 31-year-old defender to the Camp Nou during this summer transfer window.

It is understood Barcelona feel they can soon strike a deal to sign Alonso, who would pen a three-year contract with them.

The report explains there are ongoing discussions over the transfer fee, as Barca want to pay an €8million (£6.7million) fee that’s currently below Chelsea’s asking price.

Barcelona confident of signing Alonso

Barca, who have been extremely active in this window, clearly aren’t done quite just yet.

Alonso is viewed as someone to provide competition for Jordi Alba in the full-back position.

If he exits Stamford Bridge, he’ll leave a significant hole behind as the perfect competition for Ben Chilwell in Chelsea’s left wing-back position. However, the Blues may already have their replacement on the way.

It’s been reported that Brighton’s 24-year-old left-back Marc Cucurella will complete a transfer to Stamford Bridge imminently.

There’s no doubt he can do a similar job on the left flank. He does provide a tad more energy and defensive stability, too.

£24m well spent

Alonso cost Chelsea £24million to sign back in 2016, and reflecting on that, you’d have to say he’s been worth it.

He’s a player that does divide opinion when it comes to defensive frailties, but his eye-catching CV speaks for itself.

He’s won six major trophies during six years at the Blues, with a Premier League crown and a Champions League success that really stand out as the most memorable.

The attacking full-back hasn’t been everyone’s cup of tea, but he’s a player with a knack for a goal that will be missed if a deal to Barcelona takes place.
