Reports have claimed that Benfica are beginning to believe that Chelsea will meet Enzo Fernandez’s release clause in January.

According to the Daily Mail, the Portuguese side are still unwilling to sell their young star in January, despite growing interest coming particularly from the Premier League.

Strengthening in the midfield area is something that is looking like an imperative at Stamford Bridge in the next couple of transfer windows.

As things stand, they are set to lose both Jorginho and N’golo Kante at the end of the season, with their contracts set to expire.

There are currently no concrete signs that either will extend their stay at Stamford Bridge.

Planning for both to leave in just a few months’ time means that the Blues will need to add players who are already top-quality, however those who can be for a number of years.

Benfica aware of Chelsea’s Fernandez interest

There is perhaps no one who fits this description better than Fernandez. The 21-year-old is fresh off winning the award at the World Cup for the brightest youngster at the tournament.

After not starting the opening game of the tournament, he quickly became an essential part of the Argentina midfield that would eventually secure triumph in Qatar.

He has previously received praise from no other than Lionel Messi, who described him as ‘spectacular’.

The Daily Mail have claimed that Benfica are at this point expecting Chelsea to trigger the player’s release clause of £106m.

There would of course still be the requirement of agreeing personal terms with the player, who is set to compete in the Champions League against Club Brugge for his current side.

With plenty of elite clubs queuing up to try and convince Fernandez to join them, it will perhaps not be an easy task to sell that Chelsea is the best place to be.
