Burnley will reportedly attempt to sign Ian Maatsen permanently from Chelsea at the end of the campaign.

According to The Athletic, Vincent Kompany’s employers will ‘pursue’ a longer-term deal for the defender currently on loan from the Premier League side.

Maatsen has been a brilliant addition to the Clarets since departing Cobham once again over the summer.

The 20-year-old is currently experiencing his third loan spell away from Chelsea, having already spent time at Charlton Athletic and Coventry City.

Ian Maatsen has sparkled at Burnley

Now into EFL season number three, the full-back is arguably enjoying his best football whilst still under the umbrella of the Blues.

He has already made 22 appearances for Burnley, starting 20 of their 26 Championship fixtures.

His attacking contributions are impressive as well, scoring or assisting eight times in the league.

Last weekend, the Dutchman doubled his goal tally against Swansea with a brace of the highest quality.

Many left-backs would be content with converting a fantastic free-kick from around 30-yards.

But Maatsen went one further by smashing another long-range effort to ultimately seal the points for his team.

After the away victory, Kompany purred over his player’s pinpoint contribution towards the result.

“Ian has given so much defensively and then he was able to add that to his game – not many players can give you that,” said the former Manchester City captain.

Kompany will demand more magic from Maatsen for the rest of the term, as Burnley push for instant Premier League promotion.

Reach the promised land again, and the Belgian coach may have to converse with Chelsea over signing their academy product indefinitely.
