Report: English club enter talks in bid to sign £120k-a-week Chelsea player on loan

English Championship club Reading have reportedly entered talks with Chelsea about a possible loan deal for Danny Drinkwater.

According to the Reading Chronicle, the Royals want to sign the Blues-owned midfielder on a season-long loan deal for the current 2021/22 campaign.

The report explains that they are now in discussions with Chelsea about taking the 31-year-old on a temporary basis. This comes after they already signed defender Baba Rahman from Chelsea on loan this week.

In addition, it is understood Reading would need a generous hand paying a portion of the player’s wages.

It’s clear that Chelsea still need to get several individuals off the books as they have too many players on the outskirts of the squad right now.

Drinkwater, who’s career at Stamford Bridge has never taken off, needs to try experience regular football elsewhere if he wants to try get back to anywhere near his best.

The central midfielder has come a long way from the player that once won the Premier League title with Leicester City, so it says a lot that a Championship club are now after him.

He spent the second half of last season out on loan in Turkey, but perhaps he’ll now get a chance back in England.

His current deal expires next summer and the club seem resigned to taking a significant loss on the £35million they paid for him four years ago.
