Chelsea defender Fikayo Tomori is reportedly close to signing a new contract at Stamford Bridge.
According to Goal, the 21-year-old is “close” to renewing his deal with the Blues and discussions have now reached an “advanced stage”.
It is understood that the centre-back is due to receive a pay rise to bring him in line with other first teamers at the club.
Tomori is a product of the Chelsea academy that has come through the youth rank as a child and is now an important member of the senior group.
He benefited massively from a successful season in the Championship last year with Derby County and matured as a defender.
Fortunately he had Frank Lampard as his manager at Derby to oversee his development and the pair both moved to Stamford Bridge in the summer.
After working with Tomori, Chelsea boss Lampard decided to keep the promising centre-back in his group and even sanctioned the exit of senior figure David Luiz.
He’s played 16 first-team games to enhance his reputation and it’s also led to him earning his first senior cap for England.
Tomori does have a serious battle for a permanent starting position in the current Blues squad, but a new deal indicates the club see him as a long-term option and it’s well deserved after the way he’s stepped up to the top level so comfortably.
He’s a great passer and has rapid pace for a defender, while at his young age he’s only going to improve with more experience.
