Reports from Italy are suggesting that Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku’s move to Inter Milan could be hanging in the balance.

According to Calcio Mercato Sport, the Nerazzarri have instead agreed terms with Paulo Dybala, leaving the transfer for Lukaku potentially on the ropes.

It has been widely speculated that the Belgian is looking to part ways with Chelsea, after a disastrous homecoming at Stamford Bridge this season.

In his return to the Premier League, club record signing Lukaku struggled, scoring just eight league goals.

The 29-year-old also tarnished any relationship with fans, after his explosive interview at the turn of the year where he expressed his intentions to return to Inter while still in his prime.

After leaving Inter’s rivals Juventus at the end of his contract, Dybala has been the talk of a number of boardrooms in Europe, with Premier League sides including the Blues linked to securing the deal this summer.

However, Calcio Mercato have reported Simone Inzaghi’s side have won the race, with Dybala’s mum reportedly a key factor in his decision.

With reports swirling that Inter were already struggling with the financial implications of securing Lukaku, the news that the Argentine is set to join casts doubt over the possibility of adding another big-name forward this summer.

Both the club and the player really need this deal to happen now.

While there was no doubt certainly a path back for Lukaku, shown in glimpses at the end of last season, it just appears he has given up on his time at Stamford Bridge, apparently discussing his Inter future with members of their squad already.

It would always take a change of system for the Blues to make the deal work in the first place, however especially at the start of the season it looked like this was possible. Then again, it can’t be said Thomas Tuchel didn’t do everything he could to make the relationship work.
