Reports suggest Chelsea are ready to offer Reece James a new long-term contract to keep him at Stamford Bridge.

According to Independent, the 22-year-old is keen to discuss terms on a deal which would keep him at the club into his late 20s.

The full-back has been a crucial member of Thomas Tuchel’s side since the German joined, with his absence through injury noticed drastically in the performances of the team.

The England international scored five and assisted nine in the league last season, taking a step up to become one of the best right-backs in the country.

He has gained the praise of his manager too, with Tuchel labelling him as ‘incredible’ due to his impact last season.

Despite his importance, James had been on the lower end of Chelsea’s wage scheme, with the full-back only graduating from the youth setup a few years ago.

The news will come as a relief for Chelsea fans, with fears their slow transfer window so far could see one of Europe’s elite clubs make a sensational move to sign him.

Manchester City and Real Madrid had been rumoured to be intrigued by the prospect of snatching James from Stamford Bridge.

The England international is key to the club’s aim to close the gap to the top of the Premier League table, with him and fellow full-back Ben Chilwell being as good a pairing as anyone in the league.

James’ ability to play as centre-back as well as wide has been utilised by Tuchel on a number of occasions, with his physical attributes often helpful when facing some of the league’s best strikers.

It should be seen as the number one priority to sort out the 22-year-old’s contract situation, with the similar scenario revolving around Mason Mount also requiring imminent action.
