Middlesbrough are reportedly interested in signing Chelsea youngster Ethan Ampadu this summer.

According to 90min, the 21-year-old’s already got offers on the table to leave Stamford Bridge on loan this season.

It is understood there’s offers to return to Italy’s Serie A division, which is where he played last year with Venezia.

The report adds that there’s now interest from Championship side Boro, though.

Boro manager Chris Wilder previously signed Ampadu on loan a couple of years ago when he was Sheffield United coach, and would like to form a reunion now at a different club.

Middlesbrough interested in Ampadu

Ampadu impressed last season in Italy’s top flight, so you’d like to think he’d make a massive impact if he dropped down into the English Championship with Boro.

The Wales international is an extremely versatile youngster that can perform well as either a centre-back or defensive midfielder. He’s even showed further flexibility by playing wing-back, too.

He’s been linked this summer to Serie A teams Empoli, Spezia and Cremonese, as well as Premier League club Wolverhampton Wanderers.

It does feel like a move to Boro would be a step backwards in his career at a time where he should be kicking on.

Standard so high

Ampadu was one of numerous youngsters to do well out on loan last season, but actually breaking into Chelsea’s first team is a massive challenge.

The likes of Reece James and Mason Mount are absolute superstars from the academy that won’t come around too often.

Conor Gallagher and Armando Broja are the two Blues upcoming talents to be integrated into Thomas Tuchel’s first-team squad in the opening two games of the Premier League season. It’s going to be very difficult breaking into the XI, though.
