Barcelona boss Xavi would reportedly rather sign Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad ahead of N’Golo Kante.
According to Sport, Xavi has placed Zubimendi above the Chelsea midfielder on his transfer wish list.
The Spanish manager is clearly in the market for another midfield anchor, with Sergio Busquets on the decline.
Frenkie de Jong is available, yet the Dutchman has been regularly linked with a departure from the Camp Nou.
Franck Kessie has hardly kicked a football since his move from AC Milan in the summer.
With great uncertainty over the longevity of Barca’s midriff, Xavi seemingly wants the board to help him add depth in this position.
The Kante and Barca conundrum
Kante has been heavily tipped to join the La Liga leaders, as he continues to wind down his Chelsea contract.
The 31-year-old’s deal expires in the summer, meaning he will be a free agent unless fresh terms can be agreed.
There hasn’t yet been any significant movement towards a renewal, meaning the Frenchman may well be on his way out of Stamford Bridge.
Sport claim Kante is eager to become a Barca player, even if Xavi is apparently not as keen.
It is suggested he’d rather land Zubimendi, Sociedad’s much younger midfielder.
However, his release clause stands at £52m, which might put off a club who are not exactly laden with cash right now.
If the Spaniard’s want to save their pennies, then Kante would be the more desirable option.
