Report: Manchester City rekindle interest in Chelsea player Guardiola admires

Manchester City have a “genuine interest” in Chelsea’s left-back Ben Chilwell whom Pep Guardiola was already keen to sign a few years ago, according to The Athletic.

The 26-year-old has arguably been one of the best performers for Chelsea in recent games, alongside Marc Cucurella and Kai Havertz.

The 3-4-3 formation, in which he plays as a wing-back rather than a fullback, clearly suits him really well.

It is no surprise that other top clubs would be interested in the England international, and The Athletic claims that Manchester City are one of them.

This likely has more to do with the defending Premier League champions’ need for a new left-back, rather than Chiwell’s form, however.

The uncertainty over Joao Cancelo’s future at Chelsea, amid his loan spell at Bayern Munich, means Manchester City are expected to be in the market for a new left-back.

Guardiola was said to be keen on signing Chilwell before he joined Chelsea for a reported £50million in 2020.

Obviously, Chelsea have very little reason to offload such a key player.

The Blues are expected to trim their first-team squad, which contains over 30 players, this summer, but Chilwell should be far down the list of the players they would want to sell.

Chilwell also still has over two years in his current deal, which expires in 2025, so Chelsea will have plenty of time to offer him a new deal.

His injury record is a concern, but he has so far managed to regain his form after two lengthy injury absences.
