Former Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has requested the signing of Ruben Loftus-Cheek from the Lazio board ahead of his imminent appointment, according to Gianluca Di Marzio.
The 62-year-old left Chelsea for Juventus in 2019, but was later sacked after just one season. He has been out of work since but could return to management very soon.
According to Di Marzio, Sarri is set to be announced as the new Lazio manager in the next few hours.
Interestingly, the Italian journalist further added that Sarri has already identified his first transfer target in Chelsea’s Ruben Loftus-Cheek and even made the transfer request to the Lazio chiefs.
Loftus-Cheek had a rather underwhelming loan spell at Fulham, but it is hardly a surprise that Sarri might want him.
The 25-year-old midfielder had his best season under Sarri in 2018/19 in which he racked up 10 goals and five assists in all competitions.
Unfortunately, Loftus-Cheek’s season ended earlier than expected after the devastating Achilles tendon injury which forced him out for about a year.
It remains unclear, however, whether Sarri is reportedly interested in signing him on loan or on a permanent deal.
Loftus-Cheek is under contract with Chelsea until 2024 and as it stands, it seems unlikely that he would have a place in Thomas Tuchel’s squad.
Not only Tuchel does not really play a No.8 or a No.10 in his 3-4-3 system, but he also already has plenty of options in Mason Mount, Kai Havertz, and even Billy Gilmour even if he changes the system.
