AS Roma are keeping an eye on Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek as a potential January transfer target, according to Italian outlet La Gazzetta dello Sport.

The report claims that Roma are looking to reinforce their defence and midfield in the January transfer window.

In midfield, Hoffenheim’s Florian Grillitsch, whose contract with the club expires at the end of the season, is reportedly Roma’s first-choice target.

But they are also closely following a few other alternatives; including Loftus-Cheek, Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz, and Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Winks.

Roma manager Jose Mourinho should be familiar with Loftus-Cheek’s talent.

The 25-year-old made his Chelsea debut under the Portuguese in December 2014 before earning his first-team promotion two months later.

Although, Loftus-Cheek’s father Trevor did not seem impressed by Mourinho’s management of his son.

“Jose Mourinho held him back,” Trevor told the Daily Mail back in 2017.

“He should have been playing. Everyone behind the scenes was asking: ‘why isn’t he playing?'”

Loftus-Cheek in a promising situation under Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea

His father’s opinion aside, Loftus-Cheek also has very few reasons to leave Chelsea at this point.

While he has yet to cement his spot as a regular under Tuchel, he has been getting a more and more prominent role under the German.

He is arguably only behind N’Golo Kante, Jorginho, and Mateo Kovacic in the midfield pecking order.

Obviously, he would likely face less competition for spots at Roma, and, like Tammy Abraham, he might feel want to try his luck abroad.
