Newcastle United are apparently interested in recruiting Billy Gilmour from Chelsea on loan ahead of next season.

According to The Northern Echo, Newcastle have made contact with Chelsea, explaining their eagerness to grab Gilmour if he becomes available in the summer.

The young midfielder’s minutes have been extremely limited this year, starting just three Premier League games under Frank Lampard and Thomas Tuchel.

But this hasn’t damaged his reputation, nor has it affected his position within the Scottish national side.

Steve Clarke called up Gilmour for his European Championship squad, despite never capping him at senior level.

International tournaments are usually a perfect platform for players to get recognised, which could be pivotal for a talent like Gilmour.

His abilities have always been appreciated within the confines of Chelsea and beyond, even if his game time hasn’t represented that.

Following an FA Cup tie against Liverpool last March, a night that really established Gilmour’s status, Cesc Fabregas praised the teenager on Twitter.

Of course, compliments can only get you so far if the competitive action isn’t there to match.

That is why a loan move to a Premier League side like Newcastle might appeal to the mini-midfielder.

Steve Bruce is preparing to replace Joe Willock with a host of names in mind; Chelsea’s Ross Barkley and Conor Gallagher are potential options.

Alongside Gilmour, the Northern Echo also claim that Newcastle have enquired about Tammy Abraham’s situation.

Abraham looks destined to depart Stamford Bridge, as he too has struggled to make waves during Tuchel’s tenure.
