Report: Newcastle plan ‘ambitious’ move for 29-year-old Chelsea play, Blues unable to counter it

Newcastle United are reportedly one of the clubs that are hoping they can sign Chelsea’s Antonio Rudiger for next season.

Government regulations imposed on Chelsea due to Roman Abramovich’s sanction restricts the club from buying and selling players, as well as negotiating new contracts with existing stars. Subsequently, the Blues risk losing Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and Cesar Azpilicueta when their deals expire this summer.

According to The Mirror, Newcastle want to make an “ambitious” offer to try tempt Rudiger to St James’ Park.

It is understood Premier League side Manchester Untied are also keen on the 29-year-old.

The report explains English clubs are exploring to see if they can approach the German defender now rather than wait for the summer. In addition, Chelsea would legally be unable to counter any offer made to the player.

Newcastle, who now have new cash-rich owners, are set up to challenge for the big time in the next few years.

Toon boss Eddie Howe has managed to guide them away from a relegation fight with superb form in 2022, so it’ll be interesting to see what calibre of player they can attract next season.

Chelsea in the mud

Rudiger, described as “outstanding” by Joe Cole this season, is such a vital player at Stamford Bridge.

For certain, supporters are desperate for the aggressive centre-back to sign a new long-term contract. It may have just been taken out of the hands of the club, though.

A new ownership may be the only way to keep the powerhouse defender, but Abramovich will need another special licence from the government to complete a sale. Any chance of a takeover will rely on the Blues owner not receiving a penny from the sale.

Rudiger would be one hell of a signing for Newcastle if they get him.
