Report: Real Madrid shift their attention to Chelsea target after failed Mbappe pursuit
Real Madrid prioritise their pursuit of AS Monaco midfielder and reported Chelsea transfer target Aurelien Tchouameni after missing out on Kylian Mbappe, according to Marca.
The La Liga champions had their focus on chasing Mbappe on a free transfer, but the France international is now reportedly close to signing a new deal with Paris Saint-Germain.
Real Madrid could still look for an alternative attacking target, but their main objective, based on Marca’s claims, is now to strengthen their squad, including in midfield.
Tchouameni, who has been approached by Real Madrid, becomes the first name on their list.
Obviously, this could spell bad news for several other clubs who are also interested in the 22-year-old midfielder, including Chelsea.
Chelsea in fierce transfer race for Tchouameni
Earlier this month, French outlet RMC Sport claimed that Chelsea, Liverpool, and Real Madrid, were the three “finalists” in the Tchouameni transfer race.
Chelsea, in particular, will first have to find replacements for Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen, who will soon depart on free transfers.
It is unclear whether Chelsea could meet Monaco’s reported €70million (roughly £59million) demand for Tchouameni (per Fabrizio Romano), while having to allocate funds to sign centre-backs as well.
One of the possible solution is to raise money by selling one of their current midfielders.
N’Golo Kante and Jorginho will both soon enter the final year of their contract and Chelsea could cash in on one of the two this summer.
Tchoameni himself has just over two years left in his contract at Monaco.
