Chelsea are reportedly closing in on a deal to sign goalkeeper Edouard Mendy from French top-flight club Rennes.
According to the Telegraph, the Blues have reached an agreement with the Ligue 1 side for the 28-year-old and he’s now expected to arrive in London for his medical.
The report explains that his transfer fee will be a little over £20million and he’s been recommend as a target by Petr Cech.
It is claimed that the shot-stopper has been signed to provide competition for current Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, who has been under real scrutiny in the last year at Stamford Bridge for some high-profile mistakes.
Mendy is a relatively unknown player to English audiences having spent his career in France, but has had some decent experience at club level in recent years and has also earned seven international caps for Senegal.
He kept 13 clean sheets in 33 games across all competition last season for Rennes and featured in the Europa League.
The 6ft 6in goalkeeper is a commanding presence in his box and it will be interesting to see if he can force his way into the Blues XI.
Kepa, 25, has already lost the support of plenty of the club’s fans, but it looks like manager Frank Lampard is standing by him and is set to sign Mendy to help crank up the pressure on him.
